About
History
The Gavel Club of University of Peradeniya offers a remarkable learning environment for new and experienced speakers alike. There has yet to be a meeting, where one didn't step into it and leave with something profound they learnt at the said meeting.
The Gavel Club is an affiliation of Toastmasters International USA and follows similar protocols to keep the standards and help improve speakers. Originally based from the Engineering Faculty of University of Peradeniya, the club has now expanded to include members from all nine faculties and boasts a membership of over 200 members.
Who we are
You need no prior experience in public speaking or speaking in English for that matter,just join one meeting and see if it fits you and join the club!!
During club meetings you’ll build “quick thinking” skills as you give one- to two-minute speeches on general subjects during Table Topics. You’ll introduce speakers, conduct meetings, and perform other roles that will give you plenty of practice in a variety of communication experiences. You’ll learn more than just communication skills in our club you’ll build leadership skills too!
What do we do?
We offer two programmes in order to improve the skills of our members and once you coplete them,you will be awarded with a valuable certificate recognized by the Toastmasters International,USA. They are Competent Leader and Competent Communicator.Each person will be assigned with a personal mentor to support them with their journey in the Gavel Club.
Competent Communicator
The Competent Communicator programme has 10 live speeches of increasing difficulty. A person starts with the icebreaker, which is a 4-6 minute speech about themselves and continues with the other speeches,when he/she is comfortable.
Competent Leader
The Competent Leader Manual has 10 projects where they can be ticked off by completing meeting roles.
